The Eutopia Art Residency in Kavala, Greece is a MUST - AVOID!!!!! Do not waste your time at this "residency". It is a total scam. When I was there for the month of Nov, 2023, there were no other people there. I was alone the whole time. There was a staff person who worked on a part-time basis who I saw maybe 5-10 times. There was no programming. I was introduced to no one. I was told I'd have an exhibit and participate in different activities. There were no exhibors. The actual leader of the place showed up once, to collect money and have loud sex with his girlfriend, and then leave. I never saw him again. The town is moderately interesting and people friendly, but you have to make friends on your own. There is no community attached to this residency, no one to network with, no other artists to meet. It is the same as renting a room somewhere that has a shared art space to use. Do not put yourself through what I did, instead, use your money on a residency that has something to offer. My experience was so difficult that I've decided never again to apply to a residency unless it is funded. This one is a joke.
I can actually only say positive things about the residence. I/we felt very comfortable, and we received very good support. I was able to develop very well artistically and successfully achieved my goals. The added value for me was certainly very good. I also really appreciated the relaxed and very beautiful location and the short distances to the old town/harbour. As a future artist, I would think about the time of year when I want to visit the residency. (Spring, Summer,...)
