Flathead Lake Biological Station (FLBS)

The Open AIR Artist-in-Residence program at the Flathead Lake Biological Station (FLBS) offers a unique opportunity for artists to engage deeply with the ecological and cultural aspects of the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, located within the University of Montana system. Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts on Toronto Island, Ontario, Canada, offers two types of artist residencies: self-directed and thematic/programmed. The self-directed residencies provide artists, writers, and composers with private accommodations and studio spaces for short-term stays in a distraction-free environment, ideal for creative focus, research, or collaborative work. Studios are well-equipped, ranging in size and amenities, and the serene, car-free island provides a peaceful retreat year-round. The residency is housed in La Casita, a dedicated space for creation and community engagement, which supports interdisciplinary practices including visual arts, literature, new media, and more. The program, typically lasting two weeks, allows residents to work independently on their projects while providing substantial support such as private studios, research assistance, and local networking. Residents are encouraged to immerse themselves in the local culture and contribute to the community through workshops or artist talks. The setting offers a unique blend of local tradition and artistic innovation, fostering both reflection and creative output.

Grand Canyon Conservancy

The Grand Canyon Artist in Residence program offers a unique opportunity for artists to engage with the park’s breathtaking environment and its diverse visitors through innovative and immersive art projects. This program aims to elevate the cultural legacy of the Grand Canyon by encouraging artists to create works that foster emotional and intellectual connections with the natural world. Each year, three artists are selected to live and work on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, where they stay in a private apartment overlooking the canyon for a period of 3 to 10 weeks. Artists receive a weekly stipend, media exposure, and modest support for supplies and travel costs. The residency focuses on site-specific, community-engaged work, encouraging artists to share their creative processes and engage visitors in underrepresented stories about the park. By providing high-quality production spaces and professional services, the residency supports artists across various disciplines, including visual arts, writing, filmmaking, and more, for 3 or 6-week residencies. Artists benefit from a comprehensive array of services, including WIFI, access to local craftsmen, promotional support, and cultural immersion activities such as tours of the ancient medina and artist lunches. Although artist-funded, Green Olive Arts offers reduced fees for Moroccan artists and does not include housing, recommending vetted local options instead. Equipment available includes printmaking presses, encaustic tools, and woodworking tools, among others, and the program is designed to be self-directed, with additional paid services available for those seeking deeper local engagement.
