The Anderson Center at Tower View, located in Red Wing, Minnesota, offers residencies from May through October to artists, writers, musicians, and performers. Hosting about 35-40 residents annually, the program is one of the largest in the Upper Midwest and has welcomed over 900 artists from 45 states and 40 countries since its inception in 1995. Residents are provided with a private room in the historic Tower View residence, equipped with essential amenities, and meals prepared by a residency chef. The center offers a variety of workspaces, including a visual arts studio, darkroom, printmaking studio, and practice spaces for dancers and musicians. Situated on a 350-acre historic campus, the Anderson Center features a sculpture garden and is adjacent to the Cannon Valley Bike Trail. The residency program emphasizes community engagement, with residents contributing to the local community through presentations, workshops, and classes. The Anderson Center supports a diverse range of artists and embraces interdisciplinary approaches. It operates various programs, including a Deaf Artist Residency, an Early Career Artist Residency Program, and a Public Artist Residency Program, along with artist exchange programs with Salzburg, Austria, and Quzhou, China. The Arcus Artist-in-Residence Program, established in 1994 near Tokyo, supports contemporary artists in developing their creative vision. Boghossian Foundation Residency

The Boghossian Foundation Residency, nestled in the Villa Empain's serene gardens in Brussels, offers a unique retreat for artists from diverse backgrounds. Established in the refurbished housekeeper’s building, the residency has been a creative sanctuary since its opening in 2010. Dedicated to fostering Eastern and Western cultural dialogue, the Foundation annually welcomes award winners from the Boghossian Foundation Prize in Lebanon and collaborates with Creative Armenia to host three Armenian artists each year. This vibrant residency serves as a laboratory for contemporary ideas, facilitating international interactions among artists, curators, writers, and scientists. Located in the Villa Empain, the residency provides a common living area, individual bedrooms, and a shared studio, available 24/7, for stays of two to three months.

Bundanon

Bundanon's Artists in Residence program, set within the cultural and natural landscape of Australia, is one of the most extensive of its kind nationally. Established by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd, the program has been operational since 1997, supporting over 250 artists annually across all creative disciplines, including visual arts, writing, music, and performance. Located in a region renowned for its scenic beauty, this program not only offers a retreat for artists but also a vibrant community space for creative exploration and public engagement. The residency facilities at Bundanon include studios, rehearsal spaces, and accommodation in single and shared apartments, as well as self-contained cottages capable of hosting up to 10 people. The program is designed to encourage artistic development without the pressure of specified outcomes, allowing for experimental and exploratory approaches to art-making. This supportive environment is supplemented by various fellowships and awards, aimed at providing financial assistance and facilitating creative growth. Structured through collaborations with various arts organizations and cultural agencies, Bundanon’s residency program serves as an incubator for innovative practices and a forum for cultivating deep connections among artists from around the world. With its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the program particularly encourages applications from First Nations artists, artists with disabilities, culturally and linguistically diverse artists, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Cité internationale des Arts

Paris, France

The Cité internationale des Arts, founded in 1965, is a renowned artist residency program in Paris, France. It facilitates cross-cultural dialogue and offers artists from around the world a platform to engage with the public and professionals. Annually, over 1,200 artists participate in the residency, with more than 300 new residents each month. The Cité collaborates with 135 long-standing partners from over 60 countries, fostering a rich environment for creative exchange. The residency provides 326 studios across two locations: Marais and Montmartre. These studios are designed to support various aspects of contemporary creation, offering spaces for production, experimentation, and research. Each studio, ranging from 20 m² to 60 m², includes a workspace, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area. Residents can host guests for extended periods, subject to additional charges. Artists can apply for residency through the Cité's selection committees or via its network of long-standing partners. The Cité organizes different commissions by discipline and thematic, and also collaborates with institutions to support emerging international talents through residency programs and grants.

Hayama Artist Residency, located in the scenic town of Hayama in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, offers a nurturing environment for artists to immerse in Japanese culture. The residency includes a roundtrip flight to Japan, shared accommodations at hôtel ami hayama for 4 weeks, and a weekly stipend for meals and transportation. Artists enjoy a blend of scheduled events and free time for reflection, without the pressure to create new work. A highlight is the group exhibition hosted by KOKI ARTS in Tokyo's art district, Bakurocho. Selection for the residency is made by an esteemed committee of international curators and arts professionals. The program fosters future opportunities, including a fee waiver for reapplying artists the following year.

Marble House Project

Marble House Project is an expansive, multi-disciplinary artist residency program situated in Dorset, Vermont. Focusing on conservation and organic food production, it invites artists to integrate with the natural surroundings and local community, aiming to foster both individual artistic growth and communal enrichment. Located in the picturesque Alentejo region of Portugal, OBRAS Portugal is set in a 200-year-old stone building, embodying the quintessential Portuguese Monte. Overlooking a savanna-like landscape with a medieval fortress on the horizon, this artist residency offers a tranquil and inspiring setting. The residency consists of a main house with several apartments and workspaces, two cottages, four artists' studios, various open-air working places, and a swimming pool. The main house, Casa Principal, features seven apartments, a music room, and a meeting room, each designed to provide comfort and facilitate creativity. Casa Miradouro and Casa Vicente, the cottages, offer additional living and working space, boasting stunning views and terraces. Artists also have access to multiple studios, including a big hall for larger projects and performances. OBRAS Portugal provides a unique environment for artistic exploration, offering spaces for both solitude and interaction. From land art creations in the surrounding nature to shared dinners and open atelier events, the residency nurtures both the individual artistic process and community engagement. Its proximity to natural landscapes and historical sites, coupled with a range of artistic facilities, makes it an ideal destination for artists seeking a blend of cultural richness and creative freedom.
