Summer Artist Residencies 2026: A Guide to the Best Programs
The best summer residency programs for artists — from two-week intensives to three-month retreats — with what to expect, when to apply, and which programs still have openings.
Summer is when many of the most beloved artist residencies open their doors. The combination of longer days, outdoor access, and a concentrated creative community makes June through August a peak season for residency programs worldwide — from two-week intensives at craft schools to three-month retreats in rural landscapes.
If you're reading this in spring or early summer, two things are true at once: some summer 2026 programs still have rolling deadlines, and now is exactly the right time to start researching for summer 2027. This guide covers both.
What makes a summer residency different
Summer residencies tend to be shorter than year-round programs — typically two weeks to three months — and often more community-focused. Many are designed around intensive workshops, cohort models, or shared critique sessions rather than the solitary studio focus of longer residencies.
The trade-off is a different kind of productive pressure: you're surrounded by other artists for a defined window, which can accelerate your practice in ways that longer, quieter residencies don't. Many artists return to the same summer program year after year.
Programs with reviews on Reviewed by Artists
These are summer-adjacent residencies currently in our database, listed with their review ratings where available.
MacDowell — Peterborough, United States
One of the most prestigious residencies in the US, MacDowell accepts applications for two- to eight-week summer residencies across visual art, music, writing, film, and interdisciplinary work. Fellows have private studios and take meals together as a community. The summer session is highly competitive; many fellows apply multiple times before being accepted. Applications for summer 2027 open in the autumn.
Skowhegan — Skowhegan, United States
Skowhegan is a nine-week summer intensive for artists in the early-to-mid career stage. Unlike most residencies, it functions more like a school: around 65 participants live and work together on a farm in rural Maine, attending critiques and visiting artist talks daily. It is free to attend, with financial aid available. The application deadline is typically in January for the following summer.
Millay Arts — Austerlitz, United States
Set on the Millay Colony estate in the Hudson Valley, Millay Arts offers one-month residencies for visual artists, writers, and composers. The summer session draws artists who want quiet, uninterrupted time in a historic landscape. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis for some sessions.
Yaddo — Saratoga Springs, United States
Yaddo is one of the oldest artist residencies in the United States, operating since 1900. Summer residencies run from late May through August, hosting writers, visual artists, composers, photographers, and filmmakers. Stays range from two weeks to two months. Applications are reviewed twice a year.
Headlands Center for the Arts — Sausalito, United States
Located inside the Golden Gate National Recreation Area overlooking the Pacific, Headlands offers residencies of one to three months. The summer period is particularly sought after for its coastal light and proximity to San Francisco's arts community. Artists receive a studio, housing, and a stipend.
Ox-Bow — Saugatuck, United States
Ox-Bow is a summer school of art connected to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, set on a lagoon in Michigan. Unlike most residencies, it combines studio time with workshops and courses. Artists and students live together on the campus from June through August. It's particularly well-regarded for its community atmosphere and experimental programming.
Ragdale — Lake Forest, United States
Ragdale is a two-week to two-month residency north of Chicago, accepting writers, visual artists, and composers. The summer session is popular for its proximity to Chicago and the relative accessibility of its application process compared to more competitive programs.
Ucross — Clearmont, United States
Set on a 20,000-acre working ranch in Wyoming, Ucross hosts writers, composers, and visual artists for two to six weeks. The summer landscape — wide open and remote — is a draw in itself. Eight residency spots are available per session, making it intimate by design.
Montalvo Arts Center — Saratoga, United States
Located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco, Montalvo offers one- to three-month residencies with a studio, housing, and a stipend. The grounds include gardens and trails that many artists cite as central to their work during the residency.
Penland School of Craft — Penland, United States
Penland is a craft school offering one- and two-week summer workshops across ceramics, glass, metals, textiles, and more. Artist residencies of two to three years are also available, though these are distinct from the summer workshop program. For working craftspeople, the summer workshops are a way to develop a specific technique intensively.
Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity — Banff, Canada
The Banff Centre runs programs year-round in the Canadian Rockies, but the summer season — with its long days and mountain setting — is particularly active. Programs span visual art, writing, music, and interdisciplinary work, ranging from one week to several months. Many programs include a tuition fee, though bursaries are available.
European summer programs to consider
Several well-regarded European residencies have summer-specific programs or run open calls with summer deadlines. While not yet reviewed on this platform, these are worth researching directly:
- Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris — Three- to twelve-month studios in the Marais. Some shorter stays become available in summer when longer-term residents depart.
- Swatch Art Peace Hotel, Shanghai — Two-month residencies with open calls throughout the year, including summer.
- Villa Lena, Tuscany — One- to four-week residencies on a farm in Tuscany during summer, combining studio time with communal meals and a hotel on the same property.
Applications that are still open for summer 2026
Most summer residencies have deadlines between October and February for the following summer. If you're looking to secure a summer 2026 residency now, focus on programs with rolling deadlines or multiple annual intakes:
- Check the open calls directory filtered by upcoming deadline to see which programs are still accepting applications
- Programs with "rolling deadline" labels accept applications year-round and place artists in the next available slot
- Some residencies release waitlist spots in late spring — it's worth contacting programs you're interested in directly even after the stated deadline
Planning for summer 2027
If summer 2026 is no longer accessible, now is an excellent time to start building your application for 2027. The most competitive programs — MacDowell, Skowhegan, Yaddo — have deadlines between September and January. Starting your statement of purpose and work samples in summer gives you time to iterate.
Reading reviews from artists who have attended these programs gives you a realistic sense of what each residency values in applicants and what the experience is actually like — which is ultimately more useful than the program's own description.
