Conceived as an open research space, this programme is not a therapeutic programme. It is open to artists of all nationalities whose practice resonates with the notion of the ‘clinical’. This refers to a situated approach, as close as possible to the subject, ‘at the patient’s bedside’. Within the context of the residency, this approach shifts towards the artistic field: creation is envisaged here as a grounded, relational practice, attentive to the contexts in which it takes shape. The programme thus promotes approaches that remain as close as possible to real-life narratives and experiences, and which engage in a reflection on the challenges of care. Through the generous support of the de Groot Foundation, the Florence Gould Foundation, and the American Center for Art and Culture, the Library offers the Visiting Fellowship, Writer-in-Residence, Cultural Fellowship, and Composer-in-Residence programs. These initiatives provide creative professionals from various disciplines—including writers, researchers, artists, and composers—with the opportunity to engage deeply with their projects in the inspiring context of Paris. Participants are granted stipends ranging from $3,000 to $5,000 to assist with travel, accommodation, and living expenses, encouraging a focus on creative output and cultural contribution. Each year, the Résidence welcomes a dozen young directors to work on their first or second feature-length fiction film project, in two four-and-a-half month sessions. The Résidence offers its laureates the opportunity of devoting themselves to the writing of their feature films in a privileged setting in the heart of Paris. Over the four and a half months of their stay at the Résidence, every filmmaker is accompanied in the development of his or her script, and advised in the transition to production. The programme also includes a series of collective forums with industry professionals. Since it launched in , the Résidence has welcomed over 300 filmmakers from more than 60 different countries, including Lucrecia Martel (Argentina), Lukas Dhont (Belgium), Corneliu Porumboiu (Romania), László Némes and Kornel Mundruczó (Hungary), and more. Many of the graduates from this ‘Villa Médici’ of the silver screen have gone on to be selected for international festivals: Nadav Lapid from Israel (Synonyms, Golden Bear ), Nadine Labaki from Lebanon (Capharnaüm, César and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film ) and Michel Franco from Mexico (New Order, Grand Jury Prize at the Mostra ).
