Artist Funding in Senegal
Arts councils, grants, and funding bodies for artists
Ambassade de France au Sénégal / Service de coopération et d’action culturelle
The French Embassy’s cultural cooperation arm supports artistic exchange, residencies, and collaboration between Senegal and France, often through partner institutions and targeted calls. Visual artists may find support for travel, production, or residency-linked activities, especially when a Senegal–France partnership is involved.
British Council Senegal
The British Council works through cultural exchange and partnership programs that can include visual arts, residencies, touring, and professional development. Funding is typically call-based and project-specific, so it is best for artists with clear collaboration or mobility plans rather than general support.
Direction des Arts
The Direction des Arts is the arts directorate within Senegal’s cultural administration and is a key point of contact for visual-arts policy, institutional support, and sector programming. It is more likely to back exhibitions, initiatives, and artist-sector activities than to offer large unrestricted grants to individuals.
Goethe-Institut Sénégal
Goethe-Institut Senegal supports artistic exchange, residencies, workshops, and collaborative projects, often with a strong emphasis on contemporary practice and international networking. For visual artists, support is usually project-based, mobility-oriented, or tied to partnership programming rather than open general grants.
Institut français du Sénégal
The French cultural institute in Senegal regularly supports artistic creation, residencies, exhibitions, and cultural exchange, often through calls, partnerships, or mobility support. Visual artists can sometimes access production assistance, travel support, or residency opportunities depending on the annual program.
La Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain de Dakar (Dak’Art)
Dak’Art is Senegal’s flagship contemporary art biennale and one of the most important visibility platforms for visual artists working in or with Senegal. It is not a classic grant-maker, but its calls, awards, exhibitions, and associated programs can provide production exposure, professional validation, and international opportunities.
Ministère de la Culture, de l’Artisanat et du Tourisme du Sénégal
The Ministry is the central public authority for cultural policy in Senegal and is the most important state actor behind arts support, commissions, heritage programs, and institutional funding. Support is typically project-based and may flow through national programs, public institutions, festivals, or partnerships rather than open, individual artist stipends.
Musée des Civilisations noires
This major national museum in Dakar supports exhibitions, cultural programming, public education, and collaborations with artists and curators. For visual artists, the most relevant support is usually exhibition or project-based rather than direct cash grants, but it can be a powerful institutional partner.
Village des Arts de Dakar
The Village des Arts is a major artist-run hub and residency/exhibition environment in Dakar, important for studio access, peer networks, and project realization. It is not a formal grants agency, but artists often use it as a platform for residencies, workshops, and production support through partner programs.
