Artist Funding in Slovenia

Arts councils, grants, and funding bodies for artists

Slovenia has a relatively compact but well-structured public arts funding system, with the Ministry of Culture at the top and several specialised bodies and city-level programmes beneath it. For visual artists, most public money flows either directly from the Ministry or via arm’s-length organisations like the Public Fund for Cultural Activities (JSKD), the Centre for Creativity (CzK), municipal cultural departments (especially Ljubljana and Maribor), and a handful of publicly co-funded NGOs. Compared to larger European countries, the ecosystem is small but quite networked: the same institutions often combine funding, exhibition opportunities and professional development. Historically, Slovenian public arts support is rooted in the Yugoslav tradition of broad access to culture and a dense network of cultural societies. That legacy remains visible in the strong support for amateur and community-based culture (through JSKD and local cultural houses), alongside targeted schemes for professional artists. Visual arts are funded both as an autonomous field (galleries, exhibitions, production grants) and within wider “contemporary arts”, “creative industries” or “intermedia” baskets. You’ll often see open calls that are media-agnostic but very friendly to experimental visual, media and interdisciplinary practices. Instead of big, unrestricted stipends, Slovenia leans towards project-based support: production grants for exhibitions, co-financing of international presentations, small mobility/travel grants, and structured programmes like residencies or creative-business development schemes. Individual grants for a single project might range roughly from a few hundred to a few thousand euros; larger multi-year or institutional grants go higher but are usually aimed at organisations rather than single artists. Some schemes are clearly for professional artists; others explicitly welcome non-professional or emerging practitioners. When applying, it helps to align your proposal with public priorities: international cooperation, community engagement, education, innovation and cross-sector collaboration (e.g. art x tech or design x social impact). Pay attention to whether a call is geared to artists, organisations, or cultural societies. Partnerships with a Slovenian host (gallery, NGO, association) are often essential, especially if you’re based abroad. Most application materials can be submitted in Slovenian; some national and EU-linked calls accept English. Strong documentation, a realistic budget, and evidence of prior activity in the field are key, and it’s common to directly contact programme coordinators at JSKD, CzK or city offices with questions before you apply.

The Centre for Creativity is a national platform for the cultural and creative sectors, co-run by the Museum of Architecture and Design and supported by the Ministry of Culture and EU funds. It offers open calls for creative and cultural projects, business-development vouchers, mentoring and networking programmes that visual artists (especially those working in design, illustration, new media, or hybrid practices) can access. Support often covers production, prototyping, internationalisation and professionalisation rather than pure living stipends.
